Faced with the exceptional situation we have been living during these weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some sectors of the political left have brought out a certain “optimism of the will” according to which we would find ourselves at the gates of the end of neoliberalism. It is not our intention to feed sad passions in the face of the political challenge we are facing, but we do consider that – paraphrasing Antonio Gramsci’s expression – we should counterbalance this “optimism of the will” with a certain “pessimism of the intellect”, which will allow us to approach the immediate future from an analytical realism and political radicalism.
